The Broncho Billy Room

Room 308

Broncho Billy Anderson (1880-1971) was an American actor, writer, director, and producer, who is best-known as the first star of the Western film genre. He directed and starred in almost 400 Broncho Billy films over a seven year period. He was born Max H. Aronson to a Jewish family in Little Rock, Arkansas. He performed in vaudeville before joining forces with Edwin S. Porter as an actor and occasional script collaborator. In Porter’s early motion picture “The Great Train Robbery (1901)”, Anderson played three roles. After seeing the film for the first time at a vaudeville theater and, being overwhelmed by the audience’s reaction, Anderson decided the film industry was for him. He began to write, direct, and act in his own Westerns.

Broncho Billy AndersonIn 1901, with George Spoor, he formed the Essanay Film Company in Chicago. Anderson gained enormous popularity in a series of hundreds of Western shorts, playing the first real cowboy hero, “Broncho Billy.” The classic Westerner, Billy was a rugged plainsman, aligned with society out of sympathy for the weak, but nonetheless a product of the landscape in which he functioned. As an uncouth ruffian and notorious outlaw, Broncho Billy was inevitably fated to reformation by religion or the love of a woman.

Anderson traveled the western United States by train with a film crew shooting movies. With the closure of the bankrupt “Wild West” show in 1913, Essanay Film Company organized “The Col. W.F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) Historical Pictures Company”. In 1916, Anderson sold his ownership in Essanay and retired from acting. He returned to New York, bought the Longacre Theatre and produced plays. Anderson came out of retirement for a cameo in “The Bounty Killer.” He died in 1971 in Woodland Hills, California.

    Sheridan Inn Hotel Reviews

    • 5 star review  I can't begin to say enough about the staff at the hotel. They went way above and beyond for me during my stay. They even came in an hour early every morning to prepare breakfast for just me and a colleague during our stay because we had to be at work by 6 am. And the rooms are exquisitely renovated. It has an old time charm that you just have to experience. Can't wait to come back. Just wish the bar was operational.

    • 5 star review  This place is well worth a visit. Rooms are nice, clean, and just modern enough. ( No USB ports, but several plugs available.) Trains run by frequently, but they are not blowing the horns. You barely notice them. Lots of history here and the staff is top notch. Make sure to enjoy the front porch some, you won't regret it.

    • 5 star review  Although at first disappointed with the location (at a busy intersection across from the RR), it was not an issue. Actually, the location turned out to be a plus - we were able to walk everywhere. The hotel was great - room was lovely and spacious; beautiful bathroom, bed very comfortable. Breakfast was adequate; nicely presented. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed (advertising needs to be updated to reflect this). Overall, we really enjoyed our stay there.

    • 5 star review  We stayed here for two nights just this past weekend for a bike race that was taking place in town. Everything about our stay was fabulous, the hotel was very easy to find, and nicely situated v close (1 block) from Main Street. The staff were incredibly helpful, telling us about the history of the hotel, storing our bikes, baking cookies (and extra when we missed them one night), and just generally being superb. The room was a great size and the bathroom was modern and comfortable! I'd definitely stay there again (Sheridan is a really marvelous place) and i'm going to be recommending this hotel to everyone! Thanks folks!
